Ayurvedic Perspective on the Cause and Treatment of PTSD
According to Ayurveda, an ancient Indian holistic healing system, Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) is primarily caused by an imbalance of certain doshas (vital energies) within the individual. Ayurveda recognizes that traumatic experiences can disturb the equilibrium of the mind, body, and spirit, resulting in various mental and emotional disorders, including PTSD.
From an Ayurvedic perspective, PTSD is thought to primarily affect the mind and the nervous system. Trauma disturbs the vata dosha, which governs the nervous system and is responsible for the regulation of movement, respiration, and mental functions. When the vata dosha becomes aggravated due to trauma, it leads to a disruption in the normal functioning of the mind, resulting in symptoms characteristic of PTSD.
The treatment of PTSD in Ayurveda is tailored to restore the balance of the doshas and promote overall well-being. Here are some key aspects of Ayurvedic treatment for PTSD:
1. Dietary and Lifestyle Modifications: Ayurveda emphasizes the connection between the mind and body. A balanced diet comprising fresh, whole foods helps nourish and strengthen the body, while minimizing processed foods and stimulants such as caffeine and alcohol. A regular routine that includes adequate rest, exercise, and relaxation techniques like meditation, yoga, and pranayama (breathing exercises) is highly recommended.
2. Herbal Remedies: Ayurveda employs various medicinal herbs and formulations to help pacify the aggravated doshas and support the nervous system. Ashwagandha, Brahmi, Jatamansi, and Shankhpushpi are some herbs commonly used to reduce anxiety, calm the mind, and improve mental clarity.
3. Panchakarma: This is an intensive Ayurvedic detoxification and rejuvenation process that aims to eliminate toxins and restore balance. Panchakarma therapies can include basti (cleansing enemas), nasya (nasal administration of herbal oils), and shirodhara (continuous pouring of warm oil on the forehead), which help to calm and nourish the nervous system.
4. Ayurvedic Therapies:
A specialized relaxation and calming technique using herbal oils, known as Abhyanga, can be beneficial in reducing the symptoms of PTSD. The therapeutic touch and warm oil help to calm the mind, release emotional tension, and improve overall well-being. Abhyanaga can be self administered or administered by an Ayurvedic Practitioner.
Nasya oil administered to the nasal passages is effective in balancing the nervous system.
Pranayama breath techniques, taught by an experienced Practitioner are important tools in the management of PTSD.
Marma Therapy, which is the balancing of vital life force energies through the activation and stimulation of select Marma points on the body can be very helpful in calming and regulating the nervous system. Tuning forks, verbalized oils or creams, gemstones, and essential oils may be included in the therapy.
Shirodhara is an Ayurvedic therapy which applies a steady stream of warm herbalized oils over the forehead for 30-40 minutes. The therapy is very soothing and calming to the nervous system.
